Things To Do In Vegas!
Kathy Marshburn.

Things to do in Vegas…where to start? I have been to Vegas numerous times. I am not a gambler (being in this biz is gamble enough for me) but I always find plenty to do. Below are some examples of things to do in Vegas and also some of the amazing outdoors just outside of Vegas.

The casino hotels are unbelievable with elaborate and ornate decorating and have free exhibits to entice visitors. The Mirage: volcano that erupts, Bellagio: water displays that play to music and a conservatory with botanical gardens, Treasure Island: battleship with fighting pirates, Flamingo: Wildlife Habitat, MGM: Lion Habitat, Mirage: aquarium and tropical rain forest, Rio: Masquerade Sky Show. The free things to see at the casinos is too numerous to list. And our hotel, Circus Circus features free circus acts. For great shopping, Caesar’s Palace The Forum Shops with a statue displays that come to life with the Fall of Atlantis and also the Hard Rock Miracle Mile shopping mall has computer generated thunderstorms. Many of the themes make you feel like you are in another city or across the world. The Eiffel Tower replica is at Paris. Can’t make it Italy? The Venetian has a gondola ride.

Endless buffets. Rio has a great one with lots of variety, Bellagio has a good seafood one, most casino hotels have several with every type of cuisine you can imagine. Some can be pricy. There are world famous restaurants by chefs like Wolfgang Puck and Emeril Lagassi. You can also have dinner while watching knights joust at the Excalibur. There are also numerous clubs if you like music or want to dance.

There are attractions for the adventurous and brave, for a price. You can jump off of the roof of the Stratosphere hotel, go on thrill rides, or take a helicopter over the city. And exhibits. There is a Titanic Artifact Exhibit, you can be a CSI, Bodies-The Exhibition, car museum at Imperial Palace, so much more!

World famous Vegas shows! “O” Cirque du Soleil, Criss Angel magic, Phantom, Blue Man Group, The Lion King, Donny and Marie, Legends in Concert (a variety of music impersonation acts like Elvis, Dolly, Marilyn Monroe, the Beatles, Madonna, Cher), various variety shows. Many hotels also have free lounge acts.

If you do want to gamble but not sure how, most casino hotels offer free lessons. And yes, as long as the cocktail waitress thinks you are gambling, drinks are free.

A few tips. The casino hotels are huge. Wear comfortable walking shoes. To tour the casino hotels will take you awhile. If you rent a car, it will be difficult to drive the strip to go from hotel to hotel, unless you want to valet ($$). Lots of traffic on the strip. Hotels have parking garages but can be a hassle for the time all of that takes. There is a city bus that runs up and down the strip to take you from one end to the other. Some of the hotels offer free trams. Most but not all, run very often and throughout the day and night. The City Center Tram goes from Monte Carlo to Bellagio. There is a free tram that runs Excalibur-Luxor-Mandalay Bay. The Hard Rock shuttles from the Hard Rock to Caesar’s Forum Shops to the Fashion Show Mall to the Stardust and back (this one stops around 7pm). There is a monorail between the Mirage and Treasure Island. Rio/Harrah goes Rio-Caesar’s Palace-Paris-Harrah’s. Sam’s Town offers a shuttle every 1 ½ hours to goes to places on The Strip to Downtown Vegas.

Also, wear a watch. There is no concept of time inside the casino hotels! And, guys, if you are with a lady, ignore the flyers and stuff that are trying to be passed to you on the sidewalks!

The Strip has many free things to do and see, keep in mind that some of it can be pricy. Downtown Las Vegas aka “Old Vegas” is just down the strip. Don’t be fooled by the name, downtown. It is still Vegas. Downtown features the older and original hotels that offer less expensive meals and cheaper gambling slots and tables and has an awesome overhead display.

If you want to get away from the city lights, Lake Mead (various water activities), the Colorado River, and Hoover Dam are close by. Please check traffic conditions before you leave. There is currently a construction project building a bypass bridge for the Hoover Dam. It is supposed to be complete November 2010. Also, the Grand Canyon is about a 4 ½ hour drive from Vegas. If you have never been, don’t miss it!! You can drive or forget the hassle, there are tour companies that will pick you up and drop you off right at your front door and also feed you along the way. If you want to splurge, take a plane ride to the canyon and then helicopter to the bottom for lunch.

There are state and national parks nearby for the outdoors featuring canyons, desert uplands, rivers, streams, a variety of wildlife, and areas that once inhabited Indian tribes. Here is a list of some outdoor things you can do within a day including hiking, boating, picnicking, fishing, enjoying the unbelievable scenery. Mount Charleston-it may be snowing in the mountains! If so, you can get there in less than an hour to ski/snowboard. Bryce Canyon National Park is spectacular! Red Rock Canyon is only 15-20 minutes away and has beautiful red sandstone canyons, wildlife, and Joshua Trees. Others include Cathedral Gorge State Park, Death Valley National Monument, Echo Canyon State Park, Lake Havasu/London Bridge (a popular tourist spot with gift shops and antique stores along with lake activities), Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge (a true oasis in the middle of the desert and home to a variety of wildlife).

I hope this helps. There is so much more but this will give you a start.

See you there!

Kathy Marshburn
